چکیده

The time delay between the formation of a population of stars and the onset of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) sets important limits on the masses and nature of SN Ia progenitors. Here we use a new observational technique to measure this time delay by comparing the spatial distributions of SNe Ia to their local environments. Previous work attempted such analyses encompassing the entire host of each SN Ia, yeilding inconclusive results. Our approach confines the analysis only to the relevant portions of the hosts, allowing us to show that even so-called “prompt” SNe Ia that trace star-formation on cosmic timescales exhibit a significant delay time of 200-500 million years. This implies that either the majority of Ia companion stars have main-sequence masses less than 3 M , or that most SNe Ia arise from double-white dwarf binaries. Our results are also consistent with a SNe Ia rate that traces the white dwarf formation rate, scaled by a fixed efficiency factor. Subject headings: stars: evolution – supernovae: general

Implications of Two Type Ia Supernova Populations for Cosmological Measurements

Recent work suggests that Type Ia supernovae (SNe) are composed of two distinct populations: prompt and delayed. By explicitly incorporating properties of host galaxies, it may be possible to target and eliminate systematic differences between the putative prompt and delayed populations. However, any resulting postcalibration shift in luminosity between the components will cause a redshift-depe...

The Effect of Different Type Ia Supernova Progenitors on Galactic Chemical Evolution

Aims. Our aim is to show how different hypotheses about Type Ia supernova progenitors can affect Galactic chemical evolution. Supernovae Ia, in fact, are believed to be the main producers of Fe and the timescale with which Fe is restored into the interstellar medium depends on the assumed supernova progenitor model. This is a way of selecting the right progenitor model for supernovae Ia, a stil...

Predicted and Observed Evolution in the Mean Properties of Type Ia Supernovae with Redshift

Recent studies indicate that Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) consist of two groups — a “prompt” component whose rates are proportional to the host galaxy star formation rate, whose members have broader lightcurves and are intrinsically more luminous, and a “delayed” component whose members take several Gyr to explode, have narrower lightcurves, and are intrinsically fainter. As cosmic star formatio...

THE LARGE–SCALE ENVIRONMENTS OF TYPE Ia SUPERNOVAE: EVIDENCE FOR A METALLICITY BIAS IN THE RATE OR LUMINOSITY OF PROMPT Ia EVENTS

Using data drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the SDSS–II Supernova Survey, we study the local environments of confirmed type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) in the nearby Universe. At 0.05 < z < 0.15, we find that SN Ia events in blue, star–forming galaxies occur preferentially in regions of lower galaxy density relative to galaxies of like stellar mass and star–formation rate, while SN...

Sn 1984a and Delayed Detonation Models of Type Ia Supernovae

Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT SN 1984A shows unusually large expansion velocities in lines from freshly synthesized material, relative to typical Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia). SN 1984A is an example of a group of SNe Ia which have very large blue-shifts of the P-Cygni features, but otherwise normal spectra. We have modeled several early spectra of SN 1984A with the multipurpose NLTE model a...
